Raducanu ends season with Transylvanian Open pull out

Emma Raducanu’s regular WTA Tour season has ended pretty much as it started, with an injury causing her to pull out of her last scheduled solo tournament.

The former US Open champion this morning withdrew from the Transylvanian Open in Cluj-Napoca citing a wrist problem. The move will have disappointed fans in Romania, who have closely followed her rise given her family links to the country.

Her management stated that she still intends to play the Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow next month, which sees Great Britain as one of the twelve teams in the finals week of the team competition.

There was little sign of any physical issue when the 19 year-old gave world number eleven Daria Kasatkina a spirited challenge at the WTA event in Ostrava on Tuesday, before losing 7-5 6-4.

A tournament statement read: ‘Unfortunately, Emma will not be with us at this edition of the Transylvania Open, due to an injury. We know that many fans wanted to see the player with Romanian origins on the court, and we would have liked to offer them this experience. However, tennis is unpredictable, and in such situations the only solution is recovery. We wish Emma the best of health.’

Injuries have been the recurring theme of what was always likely to be a difficult year of transition for Raducanu which has certainly proved to be the case.

As it stands she has won 17 matches and lost 19 in the season which followed her extraordinary triumph at Flushing Meadows in 2021.
