Reds injury woes as Alisson, Diogo Jota doubts for opener

Liverpool are facing some injury woes with a number of first-team players all doubts for the opening game.

Star players like Diogo Jota and Alisson Becker are out, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has had another injury setback. Jota undertook scans on Thursday after enduring a hamstring problem during training during the Reds’ tour of the Far East, while he had the same issue when on international duty for Portugal last month.

Alisson suffered an injury before Friday’s 2-0 friendly win over Crystal Palace, though it’s thought the Brazil international should be back in time for the Community Shield against Manchester City on July 31. But the trouble lies in Portuguese forward Jota’s chances of featuring in the Premier League opener away against Fulham.

Jurgen Klopp said about injury issues via the Liverpool Echo: “Not exactly sure (how long they will be out). Ali has a chance for City, Diogo not. Ali is an abdominal muscle. It’s nothing serious but he can’t do goalie training at the moment and shouldn’t play in this moment, but he can still do some other things.

“He has a pre-season so he doesn’t lose time, but these kind of things happen. The boys have to travel a lot and Diogo trained and you never know exactly. They are only little things, nothing serious, but we have to be careful because the rest of the season is much longer than the start.”

At present, the Reds have former West Ham shot-stopper Adrian as their only senior available goalkeeper. Caoimhin Kelleher did not travel on the tour due to an issue.
