Roma’s European hopes dented by draw with Salernitana

AS Roma were held to a surprise 2-2 home draw by Salernitana on Monday that dented their hopes of qualifying for European football next season via their Serie A position.

Roma moved up one place to sixth on 60 points after Juventus were docked 10 points late on Monday following a new ruling in the case centred on their transfer dealings.

The Turin side dropped from second to seventh on 59 points but have a game in hand at Empoli later on Monday.

Monday’s draw left Jose Mourinho’s Roma side one point behind fifth-placed Atalanta and four off AC Milan in fourth with two games remaining.

Salernitana took a shock 12th-minute lead through midfielder Antonio Candreva after a cross by Lassana Coulibaly.

Roma equalised just after the break thanks to Stephan El Shaarawy but Boulaye Dia put Salernitana back in front before Nemanja Matic levelled for the hosts seven minutes from time.
