Serie A: ‘Neapolitans are losers, they’re never happy’, says De Laurentiis

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis risks sparking further drama with the club’s fanbase after claiming that locals of the Campania capital ‘are losers’.

The Rome-born film producer has often come to blows with the club’s supporters over his 19 years in charge, and was assigned police protection back in April due to rising tensions.

De Laurentiis surprised many Napoli fans in the summer when he hired Rudi Garcia to replace Scudetto hero Luciano Spalletti. The French coach failed to impress and was replaced by veteran tactician Walter Mazzarri last month.

As reported by La Repubblica via Calciomercato.com, De Laurentiis spoke strongly at Castel Nuovo on Thursday during the ceremony that saw Spalletti handed honorary citizenship of Naples, but one comment he made wasn’t released by the press.

At one point, the Napoli president said: “Neapolitans are losers because they’re never happy. I come from a family with seven Neapolitan family members, among those an aunt is fortunately still alive and is a burglar…”

Things have already started to grow tense in the Campania capital this term after the team’s disappointing start to the campaign and these comments will do little to placate a frustrated fanbase.
