Seven people arrested following disorder at Leicester’s Europa League game

Seven people were arrested following disorder during Leicester’s Europa League match with Legia Warsaw at the King Power Stadium on Thursday evening, Leicestershire Police have confirmed.

Twelve officers were injured with two being treated at hospital, one for concussion and another having suffered a fractured wrist.

The disorderly behaviour broke out within the Legia Warsaw fans section in the second half of the game as Leicester led 3-1.

Some Legia Warsaw supporters let off flares and, The Athletic understands, tried to rip through the seat coverings to approach Leicester fans. They also attempted to breach the segregated line — set up by the police to separate the two sets of fans — and assaulted officers in the process.

At full time the police held back the Polish team’s fans in the stadium to maintain public and officer safety.

The force added: “A total of seven arrests were made and a large number of ejections were also made from the ground.

“All those arrested remain in custody at this time.”

Assistant Chief Constable Julia Debenham said: “While I am pleased that our officers responded well and managed to contain the away fans within their section and minimise contact between them and the home crowd, it’s extremely disappointing that a number of fans acted the way they did and 12 officers were injured during the incident.

“This type of behaviour is not acceptable and we will be investigating the incident fully in order to bring those offenders to justice.”

Leicester’s 3-1 win over Legia Warsaw put them top of their Europa League group.
