Solskjaer to ring changes ahead of Manchester City clash

 

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned his Manchester United stars that there must be a major reaction against title-chasing City tonight.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned “there will be consequences” for Manchester United’s under-performing stars after their 4-0 thrashing by Everton at the weekend.

United missed a glorious chance to return to the top four with a dismal display at Goodison Park, a performance which led to Solskjaer apologising to supporters post-game.

Former United captain Gary Neville labelled the display “rancid”.

Now the Old Trafford chief, in conversation with his former teammate, has promised there will be changes – and not just Luke Shaw after his return from suspension.

“Of course there will be consequences,” said the Norwegian, in an interview for Sky Sports. “We’re not going to see the same team.

“We had a plan before the (Everton) game how we’re going to look against City anyway and some decisions would have to wait.

“We had a plan anyway and those two plans (Everton and City) weren’t the same.”

Scott McTominay was only a substitute against the Toffees and could be restored to midfield, while Diogo Dalot or Ashley Young could be set to line up at right-back; Victor Lindelof had played there on Merseyside.

Jesse Lingard is likely to return, particularly with Solskjaer again referring to United’s running stats at Goodison, having fumed post-game about his side being outworked.

“A game like this changes how you think. It’s about a response, you provoke a reaction, you know management is not that easy.

“But you’ve got to push the right buttons because we can’t work on the pitch or on fitness. It’s mindset and I know the players, they’re good. Talented players.

“And I know all the talk about that stat ‘we didn’t run enough’ – Everton out-run us, that was the thing; we got out-worked on the pitch.

“But we out-worked and out-sprinted many other teams in the Premier League.

“City, we have to bring something different to that game. We want the fans clapping us off knowing that we’ve given everything.”

Solskjaer and a 20-man squad stayed at The Hilton in Deansgate on Tuesday night, ahead of the game.

Phil Jones was not in attendance and looks set to miss out against City.
