Staveley pledges to take Newcastle to the top

Newcastle United’s new co-owner, Amanda Staveley, has insisted that they are aiming to take the club to the “top of the Premier League and in Europe”.

The Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle has been in the works for the last few years. It fell through last year but reports emerged on Wednesday suggested that it was back on.

This came as Saudi Arabia settled its long-term dispute with beIN Sports.

The takeover was completed on Thursday evening as the Premier League announced that they had accepted the proposals.

Staveley is part of the consortium that have become the new owners of Newcastle. After the takeover was confirmed, she was interviewed by Sky Sports. She believes that Newcastle United are the “best team in the world”:

“We’re proud to be part of the Premier League. It’s an incredibly competitive league which we love, Premier League football is the best in the world.

“Newcastle United is the best team in the world, we want to win trophies, top of the Premier League and in Europe. But trophies need investment, time, we want people to work with us to get to where the club needs to be.”

She added: “We want Newcastle to be top of the Premier League, and we want to get there. It’ll take time, but it’ll get there.”

On potential signings, Staveley said: “Obviously we’ve just come here, we’ve got a great squad, we’re really proud, I had a great chat with Jamal, we’re really excited about strengthening the squad.

“We have to work with FFP and make sure this is done over a long term.

“You can be assured we want to invest at every level.
