Subomi shines at Lagos boxing show

15-year-old rookie boxer Adewunmi Subomi has been hailed for her outstanding performance after she emerged victorious over the weekend at the 106th edition of the Monthly Saturday Boxing Show held at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Hall, Rowe-Park, Yaba.

Adewunmi was voted by the Referees and Judges present as the best boxer out of 18 pugilists that fought in nine bouts.

The Floyd Mayweather idolizing Adewunmi stopped a much experienced Adedeji Rhoda of Diamond Boxing Club in the third round of their 44kg contest to win her first award in just her first fight on the premier amateur boxing platform in Nigeria.

Speaking to Sportinglife.ng on her feat, Adewunmi thanked the chairman of Lagos State Boxing Hall Of Fame, Olawale Edun for his commitment to the growth of boxing and urged other female boxers not to relent in their efforts to record success in their chosen career.

She also spoke on her desire to join the Nigerian Navy in the future and said representing Nigeria at the Olympic Games in the future would be the highlight of her boxing career.

She also advised other upcoming boxers like herself to shun bad company and other social vices, adding that discipline is key to having a successful career in sports.

Meanwhile, Owonikoko Boxing Club’s Adedoyin Raji scored a split decision victory over Jamiu Taiwo of Brightest Boxing Club in the men’s 49kg category.

Ab Abere from Temple Boxing Club was knocked out in the second round by Adeoye Ayanfe from Diamond Boxing Club in the first 60kg fight, while Adebayo Dada from AMK Boxing Club was overpowered by Daniel Joshua from Mayor Boxing Club in the second 60kg fight.

Star Boxing Club’s Ajadi Fatai defeated Echetta Ifeanyi of Champion Boxing Club in the 64kg weight class by a 5-0 unanimous decision while the 69kg bout saw Gabriel Akintade of Hard-Punch Boxing Club shock the crowd to beat 2019 African Games Silver Medalist Osoba Afeez of Confidence Boxing Club by a 4-1 majority decision.

Adegboye Thompson of Capsolight Boxing Club could not stand the punches of a very confident Okenla Dayo of Always Boxing Club as he was knocked out in the first round of their 75kg fight.

The last fight of the day had Taiwo Boxing Club’s Ezekiel Jacob defeat Adenaike Dayo of Kamlat Boxing Club in the 81kg weight class by a 5-0 unanimous decision.
