Sunderland handed Nathan Broadhead injury blow

Nathan Broadhead will be out of action for at least three months – and could miss the remainder of Sunderland’s season, Lee Johnson has revealed.

The on-loan Everton forward suffered a torn hamstring in the Black Cats’ 5-1 Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat at Arsenal last week.

And a scan has revealed that the injury is a serious one, dealing Sunderland a major blow.

“It’s a bad one for Nathan,” said Johnson.

“I would say it will be a minimum of three months, but it could be the season.”

Broadhead had scored in the game against Arsenal at the Emirates before limping off before half-time.

The 23-year-old had suffered hamstring trouble earlier in the season which kept him out for a month, although this latest injury is understood to affect the opposite leg.

Broadhead’s injury at Arsenal came just as he had hit a rich vein of form, scoring six goals in as many games in all competitions, and taking his total for the Black Cats to eight in total.

Johnson said at Arsenal that Broadhead’s injury made it all the more important for Sunderland to strengthen in the January transfer window, with the club having struggled with a long injury list for months.
