There’s a problem in Arsenal, Tierney raises alarm

Kieran Tierney has confessed that things are ‘terrible’ at Arsenal right now.

Sunday’s shocking 1-0 defeat to Burnley saw the Gunners lose four home league games in a row for the first time since 1959.

It was a game littered with ill-discipline and mistakes, including a brainless red card for Granit Xhaka and an own goal by Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.

The display summed up just how bad it is going right now for Mikel Arteta’s side, who are just five points off the relegation zone.

More punishment could yet come when in-form Southampton visit the Emirates on Wednesday.

Defender Tierney pulled no punches in his assessment of the situation, laying the blame squarely at the players’ door.

The Scot said: “It’s not good enough. There is no way to disguise it. It’s terrible, to be honest.

“It’s not what we are, not where we are as a club. It’s not what the fans deserve, it’s not what the manager deserves, it’s not what the board and that deserve.

“It’s us players that need to take responsibility for this. It’s on us and nobody else.

“We have got a great manager and we believe in him 100 per cent. The blame is on us, nobody else.”

Tierney did not want to comment on Xhaka’s game-changing moment, when the Swiss was dismissed after VAR caught him grabbing Ashley Westwood by the throat.

The left-back’s refusal to lay any blame on Arteta was admirable and understandable, given no one in their right mind publicly slams their boss.

But it will not save the Gunners chief from scathing criticism elsewhere.

On Sunday, Arteta is due to celebrate his one-year anniversary in charge at the Emirates – if celebrate is the right term for the strangest of tenures.

Real progress was clear to see over the summer as a clutch of whizkids and Aubameyang helped land an FA Cup and Community Shield double.

But form has fallen off a cliff this term, both individually and collectively.

Aubameyang has now scored just two goals – in the right net – in 12 games this term, and is looking a shadow of the player he was before signing his latest contract.

While the team have mustered only two goals in their last EIGHT Premier League fixtures.
