Tomori reaping the reward of hard work at San Siro

Nigeria born England international Oluwafikayomi Oluwadamilola Tomori otherwise called Fikayo Tomori is on the verge on landing an extended contract at AC Milan after management dubbed his performance superb.

Tomori who was eligible to play for the Super Eagles before he and compatriots Tammy Abraham decided to pitch tent with the Three Lions, still has three years contract with the club, but his performance has wowed all forcing the club to think of extending the romance before suitors hijack him.

The new contract report say is a reward for the key role the defender played in the Italian club’s Serie A title success. Only few days ago the Stefano Pioli tutored side emerged Italian champions and indeed celebrated their success with Tomori and his teammates since jubilating all the way with ever-green fellow and teammate Zlatan  Ibrahimovic piloting the celebration.

Tomori, who is hoping for an England recall when Gareth Southgate names his squad for the Nations League games on Tuesday, made more appearances than any other Milan outfield player on the club’s way to the title.

The 24-year-old Chelsea academy graduate still has three years remaining on the contract he signed at Milan, when he moved to Italy permanently last summer.

But Milan have been so impressed by Tomori, who can now speak fluent Italian, that they want to reward him with an extension and make him a pillar of their squad moving forwards.

“Once I came to Milan, I wanted to be here,” Tomori told the Athletic. “I saw how motivated the team was, how motivated the coach was. When I came it was Covid, so fans couldn’t come into the stadiums, but I could still feel the San Siro, the fans. Ever since I’ve been here, from the first minute, it’s been amazing. I couldn’t have asked for anything more, and to finish the season with something like the Scudetto is indescribable.”

Tomori is settled in Milan and is enjoying his football under manager Stefano Pioli, who rates him as one of the best defenders in European football.

Paolo Maldini is also a big fan of Tomori, who has enjoyed a better season than just about all of Southgate’s other England centre-backs. Despite his impressive performances, however, the former Derby county loanee has still, mysteriously, only won two England caps.

Southgate left Tomori out of his last two England squads, in March and last November, preferring the likes of Arsenal’s Ben White and Marc Guehi.
