Transfer: Premier League clubs interested in Mathys Tel

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has reportedly emerged as a potential transfer target for a number of Premier League clubs.

In July 2022, when Tel was just 17 years of age, Bayern were prepared to pay €28.5m to sign the teenager from Rennes on a long-term contract.

That was despite Tel failing to score in his opening 10 matches for the French outfit, yet the prospect has already proven to be a valuable member of Bayern’s senior ranks.

Although the majority of his appearances have come from the substitutes’ bench, Tel has six starts and 40 outings as a replacement to his name before his 19th birthday, which is not until April.

During that period, he has contributed 12 goals and three assists, more recently playing backup to the free-scoring Harry Kane.

As it stands, the assumption is that the France Under-21 international will eventually command a regular starting spot in Thomas Tuchel’s or a successor’s lineup.

However, as Tel continues to prove himself, there may become a stronger desire to gain more minutes on a weekly basis in competitions other than the DFB-Pokal, which Bayern have already been eliminated from this season.

According to BILD, a number of unnamed Premier League clubs are beginning to consider whether it is plausible to negotiate a deal with Bayern.

The report suggests that there is the temptation to try to make a bid for the starlet, who requires at least one senior player in Bayern’s final third to pave the way for more appearances.

In the short term, Bayern and Tuchel are unlikely to consider any offers, appreciating the role that Tel is currently playing behind Kane in the pecking order.

From 480 minutes of football in 2023-24, Tel has chipped in with six goals and three assists, getting along with his business at a time when Kane is the undisputable first choice.

Of the Premier League clubs who may hold an interest, Arsenal and Newcastle United have previously been credited as admirers, while Tottenham Hotspur are allegedly in the market for a new winger or versatile attacker.

Tel still has over three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at the Allianz Arena and reportedly has little desire to leave at this stage.
