Transfer Update: Ronaldo set for Old Trafford return

With Juventus in serious danger of missing out on a 2021/22 UEFA Champions League place, here is the latest on Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.

According to Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 36-year-old forward has set his sights on a return to Manchester United.

It is claimed that Ronaldo has asked his super-agent Jorge Mendes to find out whether or not his former club would be interesting in taking him back to England in the next transfer window.

The Portugal captain is said to understand that it would be difficult for the transfer to materialise due to the financial implications of taking him on amid the coronavirus pandemic, but would reportedly be prepared to take a significant wage cut to get the deal over the line.

Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid for a club-record fee in 2018, with many believing the Bianconeri signed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to inspire them to European glory.

Juve, however, have struggled in the Champions League in recent seasons, having been knocked out by Ajax Amsterdam, Olympique Lyon and Porto in the past three campaigns.

The Old Lady now face a battle to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition, with both Lazio and Napoli having games in hand over Andrea Pirlo’s fourth-placed men.

Ronaldo has also been linked with a return to Los Blancos in recent weeks, although Real president Florentino Perez has ruled out a move for the Spanish giants’ all-time record goalscorer.
