Tuchel: Chelsea deserved more after Benzema rescues draw

Chelsea scored an important away goal but would have felt they could have got more in a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were superior on the night with five shots on target, with Timo Werner spurning an early chance to beat Thibaut Courtois.

Christian Pulisic made up for the miss after 14 minutes, with the American showing his cool by rounding the goalkeeper before splitting the ball between two Real Madrid defenders on the line.

Despite their dominance, Chelsea conceded after a moment of brilliance from Karim Benzema.

The French striker cushioned the ball with his head before unleashing an acrobatic volley past Edouard Mendy with 15 minutes left in the half.

And speaking after the game, Tuchel admitted his side should have scored more in the game.

He told BT Sport: “We started the game very very well, with a lot of courage and quality. We deserved to win the first half, we had chances. Unfortunately they scored from a set-piece and they had nothing else, we didn’t allow any chances.

“It was a disappointing score at half time. We had to stay calm and not lose confidence. The second half was very tactical, you could feel that we are a bit tired. We only had a few days to recover from another tough away game. We have to live with 1-1.

“The goal was well deserved and we should have scored at least one more. We conceded more or less out of nothing and that can always happen against individual quality.”

Real will travel to Chelsea next Wednesday for the second leg.
