UCL: Bayern v Man City: what the stats say

Bayern Munich have lost their last two meetings with Manchester City in the Uefa Champions League – the first time they’ve lost consecutive games against them, and as many defeats as they had suffered in their first five clashes in the competition (W3 L2).

Among sides who have faced them 5+ times in the competition, Manchester City are one of only three teams to have won at least half of their Uefa Champions League meetings with Bayern Munich (57 per cent – 4/7), along with Milan (67 per cent – 4/6) and Real Madrid (50 per cent – 10/20).

Manchester City have only lost one of their last 20 matches against German teams in the Uefa Champions League (W16 D3), losing away to RB Leipzig in the 2021-22 group stage. They are unbeaten in their nine games against German sides in the knockout stages of the competition (W8 D1).

Bayern Munich will be looking to become just the fifth team to progress from a two-legged Uefa Champions League knockout tie after losing by 3+ goals in the first leg, after Deportivo de La Coruña in 2003-04 (5-4 v Milan), Barcelona in 2016-17 (6-5 v PSG), Roma in 2017-18 (4-4 v Barcelona, won on away goals) and Liverpool in 2018-19 (4-3 v Barcelona).

Since losing three consecutive games against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea in 2020-21 – the last of which being in the 2021 Uefa Champions League final – Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has won each of his last three games against Tuchel, without seeing his side concede a single goal (1-0 home and away in the 2021-22 Premier League and 3-0 in the first leg of this tie).

Bayern Munich have only lost both legs of a Uefa Champions League knockout stage tie on two occasions, with both coming against Real Madrid (2013-14 semifinals and 2016-17 quarterfinals). Indeed, their heaviest aggregate defeat was in 2013-14, losing 5-0 against the Spanish side when Pep Guardiola was their manager.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has won 99 Uefa Champions League matches, just one win away from becoming the third manager to reach 100 wins in the competition, along with Carlo Ancelotti (105, not including one awarded win with Milan) and Alex Ferguson (102). He’d reach that figure in just 158 games, with Ancelotti taking 180 games and Ferguson’s 100th win coming in his 184th game.

Manchester City have the highest pass completion rate under pressure of any team in the Uefa Champions League this season (86.4 per cent). Indeed, Pep Guardiola’s side have also completed the highest number of passes under pressure in the competition this term (3 802 in nine matches).

Erling Haaland has scored 11 Uefa Champions League goals for Manchester City this season. It’s his best return in a single campaign, and just one behind the season record for a Premier League player in the competition (Ruud van Nistelrooy, 12 in 2002-03 for Manchester United).

Since the start of last season, Leroy Sané has more combined goals (10) and assists (7) in the Uefa Champions League goals than any other Bayern Munich player (17). Indeed, despite his side failing to score, Sané was directly involved in eight of Bayern’s 12 shots in the first leg at the Etihad (five shots and three chances created).
