UCL: Chelsea force Real Madrid to wear black socks

Real Madrid will play at Stamford Bridge tonight in their home kit, but not with their usual socks. Chelsea’s socks are white this season so Zidane’s side will have to wear black socks together with their white kit. It is a combination Madrid never use.

‘Los Blancos’ will not be in all white at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. That is because Chelsea’s kit forces Real Madrid to use black socks.

Before the Champions League matches, UEFA meet with the clubs to talk about several issues. One of them is always to do with the kits.

To avoid any type of confusion, such as for television, no team is allowed to wear the same colour. Atletico Madrid had to play with red shorts in the first leg because Chelsea played in a light blue in the first leg and in dark blue in the second leg. Atletico Madrid’s marine blue shorts clash with those colours.

Chelsea had to wear different socks in the Champions League semi-final first leg at Valdebebas because this season, the West London club have blue shirts and shorts, but white socks. They also used blue socks for the match in Madrid, something which did not attract much attention.

As Chelsea will play in white socks at Stamford Bridge, Real Madrid will have to use their black socks from the third kit.

It brings back memories of when Real Madrid were founded in 1902. They played with black or dark blue socks until the 1950s until they went all white in 1955.
