VAR makes Nations cup debut as Senegal hit S/Final

 

Video Assisted Referee made its debut at the Nations Cup as Taranga Lions took on Squirrels of Benin Wednesday evening.

The technology which featured prominently at the just concluded FIFA Women’s World cup in France came into action when Liverpool ace Sadio mane scored a goal that was disallowed after the VAR proved there was an off side run.

It did not however stop Senegal from running away with victory after Idrissa Gueye scored a 69th minute goal that turned out to be the winning and only goal of the match.  The Lions had missed a couple of begging chances before finally breaking the ice

Benin focused on keeping out the opposition in the first half, but Senegal did get in behind a couple of times shortly before half-time. Aside from losing the game one other minus for the Squirrels was the sending off of Olivier Verdon for bringing down Gueye in the 82nd minute as Benin’s first quarter-final appearance ended in defeat.

Senegal still waiting for their first Nations cup trophy will face the winner between Madagascar and Tunisia in Sunday’s Semifinal.
