Venus Williams: Down in ranking but a lot to celebrate

America’s Venus Williams remains a tennis great no doubt but has gone down the WTA ranking so much that she will certainly need to work harder to come up again. Currently ranked 314 Venus it will be safe to say have paid her dues and certainly not remain at the top forever.  Looking back she has a lot to beat her chest for.

Venus Williams has won 7 Slam titles out of 16 finals and a total of 83 finals played in the women’s singles. She also won 14 Grand Slam women’s doubles with younger sister Serena Williams and two in mixed doubles.

In the decade 2000-2010 she is the player to have won the most at Wimbledon, with five wins out of eight finals (including four consecutive, from 2000 to 2003) and is one of the five tennis players (after Martina Navrátilová, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams and Billie Jean King, who, however, had two of her six wins at Wimbledon before 1968) to have won five or more in the Open Era.

Venus gives her the best of her tennis on hard and grass-courts. In addition, she is one of the three tennis players in history, in addition to Helen Wills and her sister Serena, to have won the gold medal at the Olympics in both specialties (women’s singles and doubles) in the same edition, that of 2000.

In 2012, With her victory at the London Olympic Games in the doubles, Venus became the tennis player with the most gold in history, along with Serena, thanks to her four medals.

In 2016 she also won the silver medal in mixed doubles paired with compatriot Rajeev Ram, resulting in the tennis player with the most Olympic medals in history, including men.

Williams last won a Grand Slam in the singles event at Wimbledon 2008. And in the doubles event, she last lifted the trophy at Wimbledon 2016. Not an easy feat to achieve so far, is it?
