Villa looking to equal 120-year club record in City game

Aston Villa will be attempting to equal a 120-year club record when they play host to Manchester City in the Premier League.

Villa head into Wednesday’s fixture having twice had to come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw away at Bournemouth at the weekend.

However, that point was enough to keep Villa in the top four of the standings having collected 29 points from their 14 matches during 2023-24.

Unai Emery’s side now face the challenge of squaring off against defending champions Man City and current leaders Arsenal in the space of three days.

On a positive note, though, both of those fixtures will take place at Villa Park, a ground where Villa have put together one of the most eye-catching Premier League streaks in recent memory.

A total of 13 successive league wins have been posted at their West Midlands home, a run that started all the way back on March 4.

If Villa are able to overcome Man City, it would equal the 14-game streak that was first set in 1903, and later matched 28 years later in 1931.

Remarkably, Villa are also attempting to equal a goalscoring record that has not been equaled since the 1897-98 campaign.

Emery’s side have scored at least three goals in their opening six league fixtures and another such goal haul would match Blackburn Rovers and a previous Villa side in netting that many strikes in seven consecutive home encounters.

Nevertheless, on the flip side, Emery has never recorded a victory over Man City or Pep Guardiola in his illustrious managerial career.

Emery has posted four draws and nine defeats in 13 games against his Spanish compatriot, while all five matches have been lost versus Man City.

Furthermore, City have not suffered a league defeat on a Wednesday since they lost out to Leicester City in Boxing City in 2018.
