WC play-off: Ghana appoints ex-Newcastle coach for Nigeria match
Ghana has appointed former Newcastle United and Brighton manager, Chris Houghton, as the coach to lead the Black Stars past rivals Super Eagles to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
He will replace Milovan Rajevac, who was fired after Ghana’s most disastrous AFCON showing in Cameroon where they failed to go past the group stage.
An official confirmation is due shortly.
This will be the first national team post for Houghton, whose father is Ghanaian.
Various media reports said he will be assisted by his direct rival for the Black Stars position, Otto Addo, who is an assistant coach at German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

Houghton has been in Ghana and he is reportedly the preferred choice of the country’s government.
He is widely expected to convince several England-based players eligible to play for Ghana, like Mohammed Salisu (Southampton), Tariq Lamptey (Brighton), to do so and make the Black Stars a tougher force.
Ghana will host arch-rivals Nigeria on March 23 with a return leg five days later in Abuja with the overall winners marching on to the World Cup in Qatar in November.
