Werner: Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Bayern made me have doubts over move

Timo Werner has admitted that Chelsea’s comprehensive defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last season concerned him while he was contemplating his transfer to the Blues.

Werner, who made a £48m move to join Frank Lampard’s side from RB Leipzig in the summer, has looked dangerous in his two Premier League appearances so far, having won a penalty in each game he has played.

Following his fine form in the Bundesliga last season he had a number of options to choose from for his next team, including Liverpool.

He eventually opted for Chelsea, but admitted their 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge in February in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie worried him at the time.

Speaking to German publication BILD, Werner said: “I would be lying if I said it wasn’t like that. The 3-0 home defeat of Chelsea in the first leg against Bayern hadn’t exactly spoken in favour of going to London.

“I have to say that openly because with Leipzig we always played very good and close games against Bayern.”

In spite of the defeat, Werner believes his new team have learnt from the humbling and thinks that game was a crucial one in encouraging the club to strengthen their squad.

“With Bayern showing Chelsea their weak points, the club was able to work on the pieces of the puzzle in order to catch up with the future Champions League winners Bayern,” he added. “That’s what Chelsea did.”
