Why Arteta is after Gabriel Jesus, reveals Arsenal hero Smith

Arsenal hero Alan Smith can understand the move for Manchester City attacker Gabriel Jesus.

Gabriel’s move to the Emirates Stadium is on the verge of being officially announced after he was spotted earlier this week meeting Arsenal’s sporting director Edu. It is believed that City will receive £45m for the 25-year-old who has just a year remaining on his Blues contract.

Smith told Sky Sports: “Jesus is somebody who fits the profile, age-wise, and I think he is a player that has got something to prove now. He wants to kick on in his career, he wants to play regularly and as a striker that is so important.

“He has played down the right last season more often than he did through the middle. Obviously he was in and out of the team, he was a substitute so he wants to be first choice.

“I think it that desire and that hunger is what [Mikel] Arteta is after. Players that do want to prove themselves and aren’t coasting.

“Jesus can turn into a very good central striker now that he has joined Arsenal. I think that will be the attraction, the fact that a lot of clubs were after him but he might not have played regularly.”
