Wilder’s trainer speaks on extent of his injuries after Fury defeat

Deontay Wilder required stitches in his ear after receiving a cut that ‘affected his equilibrium’ as he lost his WBC world heavyweight title to Tyson Fury in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The Gypsy King gave a destructive and dominant display at the MGM Grand, twice knocking Wilder to the floor before his corner finally threw in the towel in the seventh round.

Wilder was disappointed that the fight was stopped, though he was taken straight to hospital to have his injuries tended to.

The American’s trainer, Jay Deas, revealed afterwards: ‘He had a small cut inside the ear, it may have affected his equilibrium.

‘So he’s going to get a couple of stitches there, that’s really the extent of it. It was a tough, gruelling fight with a tough, gruelling fighter.

‘So coming from two fights in a row – November and February where he loves to be active – this will give him some time to enjoy things, enjoy his family, rest up a little bit, I think that will be the next step.’

‘He had a great performance and we will be back stronger. Even the greatest have lost and came back, that is just part of it.

‘You just take it for what it is. I can make no excuses tonight. I had a lot of complications. But we’ll come back stronger next time around. This is what big-time boxing is all about, the best must fight the best. I appreciate all the fans that came out and supported the show, and I hope that everyone gets home safely.’
