US media mogul makes late attempt to buy Newcastle with FSG vision

American businessman, Henry Mauriss, is heading up a rival bid to the consortium that wants to buy Newcastle United from Mike Ashley.

No more handshakes says Newcastle

While a deal for the Saudi-backed consortium to buy Newcastle is nearly complete, there are still steps that must be followed.

And now The Mirror suggests that Mauriss, who runs ClearTV in California, is considering a rival bid.

He is a huge fan of the Fenway Sports Group and what John W. Henry has done at Liverpool, and Mauriss believes he can replicate such success at Newcastle.

The report claims Mauriss is prepared to pay £350m for Newcastle – £50m more than the Saudi offer.

A source close to Mauriss said: “He has studied the way his fellow countrymen Werner and Henry have successfully rejuvenated Liverpool and made them one of the world’s dominant forces.”

The source added: “There is the promise of significant investment not only in the squad but also the club’s academy. It’s a fantastic business plan.

“The investor has seen the way Liverpool’s owners have harnessed themselves with the local community and made it a team effort with everyone pulling in the same direction.

“Newcastle have a huge and loyal support. It’s a club with massive potential.”

But there is no word whether the Magpies’ owner Mike Ashley would prefer this bid to that of the Saudi consortium.
