2020 Olympic qualifier: Sports Ministry abandons U-23 Eagles in Sudan
Nigeria’s U-23 side traveled to Omdurman last Tuesday without money and lost by a lone goal to their Sudanese counterparts in the first leg, final round match of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.
A member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Reforms Committee, Osasu Obayiuwana quoted a highly-placed NFF official on his Twitter handle who revealed that the NFF had a reciprocal hosting arrangement with the Sudanese FA, which it is being claimed the latter didn’t honour in Omdurman.
SportingLife.ng reports that the Sports Ministry picks the bill for all the Nigerian teams including the U-23 Eagles and the Super Falcons involved in the 2020 Olympic qualifiers.
After surviving the hunger in Sudan, the players and officials are expected back in Abuja today aboard an Ethiopian Airline flight.
The second leg fixture is scheduled for September 10 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, with the U-23 Eagles needing to win with a two-goal margin to qualify for the CAF U-23 Olympic qualifier in Egypt later in the year.
