Mikel scores in Tianjin win

Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi has scored his first goal of the season for Chinese club, Tianjin Teda who defeated Guangzhou R&F 2-1 on March Day six of the Chinese Super League on Saturday morning.

Guangzhou scored first through Zhizhao Chen in the 8th minute.

The player broke through the Tianjin defence before rounding off the keeper for the opening goal, but 17 minutes later, Mikel equalized for the home side.

The Tianjin captain capitalized on a blocked shot from teammate and Ghana international Frank Acheampong inside the 18-yard box to tap the ball into an open net in the 27th minute.

Two minutes later, Tianjin added the second through Jiakang Hui who headed the ball into the net from an Acheampong pullout.

Mikel who has started every game this season for Tianjin made three clearances, two key passes and had a game rating of 7.2 in today’s match played at the Tianjin Olympic Centre.

Victory could have gone either way from statistics, which also indicated that it was a balanced match.

It is the second victory for Tianjin from six matches which takes them to the eighth position.
