AFCON: Eagles vs Bafana: Nigerians Split over $25,000 Reward

Super Eagles will get $25,000 – about 10 million naira – for every goal they score in the must win Saturday’s cup of nations qualifier against South Africa, as handsome as that may sound, this, has however continued to generate hot reaction since on Wednesday.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State on Wednesday made the offer to the senior national team in the bid to encourage the Coach Genrot Rohr led national team to secure the Africa Cup of Nations ticket by winning the match which will be played in Johannesburg.

There were concerns on why such lump sum should be spent on football when there are socioeconomic projects begging for attention in Delta state in some of the reactions obtained.

While it is not unusual for politicians to offer cash rewards to national football teams in Nigeria and Africa, some argued on social media that the money could be better spent on service delivery.

But some could not hold back to hail the gesture.

Delta State Governor, His Excellency @GovIfeanyiOkowa was a surprise guest at our training session at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba this evening, promising the team a cash reward of $25k for every goal scored vs South Africa on Saturday.#SoarSuperEagles.

@GovIfeanyiOkowa , Why have you promised $25k for every goal scored? 😩 In comparison, the Super Falcons don’t get such humongous stipends. This is outrageous! 9million naira that can instead be used to benefit the lives of thousands of Deltans. 😞

$25k per goal? That is nine million nigeria naira and it would be enough to build a classroom block in one village in delta state. Stop enriching millionaires.
