AFCON: I’m excited Super Eagles are equal to the task, Troost-Ekong reveals

William Troost-Ekong is overwhelmed with the performance of Super Eagles teammates after their 2-0 win against Guinea Bissau on Wednesday at the on-going AFCON in Cameroon.

Nigeria had beaten Egypt 1-0 and Sudan 3-1 before brushing aside Guinea Bissau 2-0 on Wednesday, with goals from Sadiq Umar and Troost-Ekong himself.

The 28-year-old was named Man of the Match on Wednesday after his outstanding display against Gissau, who left the competition without winning a single game.

“First and foremost I am very happy for the team,” Troost-Ekong told reporters after the game.

“We said before the game we wanted to do something special, we wanted to get three out of three wins and to really make a statement on the tournament so far.

“I’m really proud of the boys, I think everybody performed exceptionally well. It wasn’t easy with eight changes and all the boys who came in, I think they showed they
deserve to play as well and that’s probably the biggest message from today’s game,”.

He relishes his partnership with teammate Kenneth Omeruo.

Troost-Ekong, a former U-19 and U-20 Holland international, made his debut for the Eagles in 2015, two years after Omeruo had won the AFCON title in 2013.

The 28-year-old, who currently partners Omeruo in central defence at the ongoing tournament in Cameroon, said the Leganes defender had been awesome in the heart of the Eagles defence.

“He is a fantastic player. He was a player I was looking up to before I joined the Eagles; he had won the AFCON at that time. I’ve enjoyed playing together with him.

“At the last World Cup in Russia, we played games together as a back three and at the last AFCON in Egypt we played most of the games together so in that sense there are no surprises.
