Akpeyi’s Kaizer Chiefs confirm departure of coach Baxter

Daniel Akpeyi’s Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the departure of coach Stuart Baxter with immediate effect after a number of disagreements with management on the way forward for the side.

The AmaKhosi have placed assistant coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard in temporary charge ahead of Saturday’s away DStv Premiership fixture at Stellenbosch FC.

“After a series of meetings, Kaizer Chiefs and coach Stuart Baxter have come to a mutual agreement of an early termination of his contract with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement.

“Assistant coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard will take charge of the senior team for the remainder of the season, starting with the next match against Stellenbosch FC on Saturday.

“We wish him well in the future. The Club will make further announcements in due course.”

Baxter returned to Naturena in June 2021 after a highly successful first spell in charge of the team between 2012 and 2015 that yielded two league titles, the Nedbank Cup and the MTN8.

His first game in charge in his second spell was the 3-0 CAF Champions League final loss to Al Ahly.

Despite having the team challenging for Champions League qualification again, it has been a fraught 2021-22 campaign that saw first round exits in both cup competitions, and the team well off the pace of runaway leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
