Arjen Robben returns to action after 175 days out

Arjen Robben returned to action in Groningen’s 2-0 defeat to Heerenveen on Sunday after having fully recovered from his calf injury.

The Dutchman hadn’t featured in a single game for 175 days, since his team’s 0-0 draw with Utrecht on October 18, when he played a total of 14 minutes.

“Good to be back,” tweeted Robben after the game. “Thanks for all the support.”

Last summer, Robben decided to return to football one year after hanging up his boots to join his former club Groningen.

“If anything, this is because of my love for the club,” Robben said at the time.

“If I can do something for the club, I think that where I can be most useful is on the pitch.”

Robben had to be replaced in his first Eredivisie game this season against PSV Eindhoven due to a groin issue.

The 37-year-old also hinted, on more than one occasion, at the possibility of retiring again, but last Sunday he took to the pitch to play 12 minutes in his third Eredivisie game this season.
