Arsenal move for EPL coach as they step up manager chase

Arsenal managing director, Vinai Venkatesham, and director of football operations, Huss Fahmy, were pictured leaving the Spaniard’s house in Manchester after a meeting on Sunday night that did not finish until the early hours of this morning.

The Gunners are still looking for a permanent successor to Emery, who they sacked in November, and Freddie Ljungberg has been in charge on an interim basis.

Arsenal are expected to hold talks with a number of candidates this week and Carlo Ancelotti, Massimiliano Allegri and Patrick Vieira are all contenders.

Arteta, however, is emerging as a frontrunner after becoming close to succeeding Arsene Wenger when he left the club in May 2018. The former Arsenal midfielder was overlooked in favour of Emery but is still held in high regard by the club’s hierarchy.

The talks with him came just hours after Arteta had helped City defeat Arsenal 3-0 at Emirates Stadium, thanks to two goals from Kevin De Bruyne and one from Raheem Sterling. In the wake of the defeat, Ljungberg called for Arsenal to clarify the managerial situation.

He said: “It needs clearing up so that everybody knows [what’s going on].

“I’m very honoured [to be in charge] and trying to do things as well as I can but it would be good to make a decision regardless of what it is.”

Arteta could be the man to provide clarity to the situation but Arsenal will have to fight with City so he can take over in the middle of this season.
