Barcelona set for huge financial loss with UCL elimination

Barcelona’s set for a significant financial loss if they suffer Champions League elimination in Munich on Wednesday night.

Barcelona find themselves in something of a perilous situation as they take on Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday. Currently the Blaugrana sit second in Group B, behind the Germans but only two points ahead of Benfica who face Dynamo Kiev.

In their pre-season budget, Los Cules had budgeted to reach at least the quarter final stage of the tournament, and failing to even progress beyond the group phase would mean losing 20.2 million euros.

This would be a severe economic blow for Joan Laporta’s presidency, and failure to secure the money earned by a round of 16 and quarter-final appearance would also harm the club’s chances of moving for players in the transfer market in January.

At the moment the club are only looking for players they can bring in on loan.

The 20.2 million loss would be somewhat lessened if the Blaugrana drop into the Europa League, which, if they could somehow win the tournament, would net them a total of 14.9 million euros.

Such an achievement would limit the club to a 5.3 million euro loss under the originally prepared budget. Though it must also be said that the more money the club can generate through sponsorship or success on the pitch, will mean a bigger budget in the future for salaries.
