Bundesliga: DFB-Pokal final slated for July 4, awaits govt nod

The German Football Federation (DFB) plan to hold the final of the DFB-Pokal behind closed doors on July 4, with the two semi-finals planned for June 9 and June 10 respectively.

The dates of these pending cup matches had been previously left undetermined with it unclear just when football would be able to resume at all in Germany, but with the Bundesliga set to restart on May 16, plans have been put in place to reschedule the remaining cup ties.

These dates are subject to the approval of the German health authorities, and there will be strict protocol over safety measures in the interest of the players and staff involved.

Bayern Munich will face Eintracht Frankfurt in one semi-final in what is a re-run of the 2018 final, which Frankfurt won, whilst the other will see FC Saarbrucken continue their glorious run in the competition with a match against Bayer Leverkusen.

One potential problem with regards to the FC Saarbrucken semi-final comes with the fact that they are a fourth-tier team and haven’t even been given permission to return to training yet.

It would seem likely that there would need to be testing of their players and staff with some degree of regularity if they are to be allowed to partake in the match against Leverkusen, and these costs could be swallowed by the DFB in the interest of completing their flagship domestic cup.
