Chelsea: Cavani on a free, Dembele blow, Newcastle chase Giroud

Fresh from securing a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup, Chelsea’s attention will now switch back to the January transfer window.

Speculation continues to build surrounding the future of Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi as Chelsea look to bolster their striking options.

While the continued speculation linking Nathan Ake with a return to Stamford Bridge this month won’t go away.

With that in mind, here’s a round-up of all the day’s latest transfer news and rumours for Chelsea.

Chelsea have reportedly been dealt a blow in their attempt to sign Moussa Dembele from Lyon.

The 22-year-old is the French side’s top scorer this season, with 14 goals in all competitions.

The young striker has been linked with Frank Lampard’s side, with Lyon recently taking the unusual measure of releasing a statement saying that they want to keep the striker for “seasons to come”.

However, he is said to be “desperate” for a move in the summer.

Newcastle are one of the clubs said to be considering a move for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud.

The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and able to negotiate a free transfer for the summer.

However, with Euro 2020 looming, the striker is hopeful of a move to gain more first team football and secure his place in France’s squad.

The Telegraph state that Newcastle made contact with the Blues last week about a move for the striker, but he will only be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge if they can bring in a replacement.

Chelsea are reportedly considering a bid for Bayern Munich left-back David Alaba, who is rated at around £60m.

Neither Marcos Alonso or Emerson Palmieri have failed to convince as a starting left-back during Frank Lampard’s time at the club, with Cesar Azpilicueta often deputising on the left and Reece James coming in at right-back.

The Mirror states that Lampard is eyeing a move for the Austrian defender, who has 18 months remaining on his deal with the Bundesliga giants.

The 27-year-old would apparently add the experience Lampard is craving in his side to supplement the youthful side of the team.

Chelsea and Manchester United have both reportedly made contact with Edinson Cavani about a free transfer at the end of the season.

The striker – who turns 33 in February – is coming to the end of his Paris Saint-Germain deal, and has apparently agreed on terms on a potential move to Atletico Madrid.

However, L’Equipe report that Cavani is yet to sign the deal, and United have made initial contact with the striker’s representatives, while Chelsea are said to have made an opening formal inquiry.

Cavani is said to have a meeting with PSG sporting director Leonardo coming up, and could even leave the club this month depending on PSG’s flexibility and the offers they receive.
