Chelsea want Villa to pay Drinkwater’s weekly wages

Aston Villa will have to stump up £110,000-a-week to land Chelsea’s Danny Drinkwater on loan, as the Blues play on Villa’s desperation to bolster their midfield.

Dean Smith’s side are far from safe, hovering one-point above the relegation zone. With vital midfielder John McGinn side-lined with a long-term injury, they are looking to a Premier League winner on a short-term loan.

Chelsea will force Aston Villa to pay all of Danny Drinkwater’s wages in the event of a loan deal.

Drinkwater returned to Stamford Bridge this month after flopping at Burnley, playing just once in the Premier League after being beaten up outside a nightclub in Manchester in September.

He has played less than 200 minutes of first-team football in two years, and Chelsea chiefs are demanding any club interested in the Englishman will have to pay 100-per-cent of his wages, according to the Sun.
Former Blues boss Mauricio Sarri played him for only 30 minutes in their Community Shield defeat to Manchester City last season, and Frank Lampard looks to have no interest either.

Back in 2016-17, Drinkwater was playing a vital role in a Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid, as he and Leicester’s triumphant squad rode the high of winning the Premier League title.

He is still only 29-years-old, and if he gets back to his old form, Drinkwater could be a key-man in Villa’s survival.

Villa lost 2-1 in the FA Cup third-round on Saturday to Fulham, but have managed two wins in three Premier League games at the bottom of the league.

Villa are next in action on Wednesday, against Drinkwater’s former club Leicester in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.
