Colombia were eliminated from the World Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout which has brought death
threats from angry fans on social media according to reports.

The two players are not the first to receive death threats during the World Cup.
A few weeks ago, Colombian authorities launched an investigation after several death threats were made
against midfielder Carlos Sanchez. The Colombian player was red carded early in the game against Japan.
The referee also gave Japan a penalty kick since Sanchez touched the ball with his hand.

Reports said the deaths threats against Carlos Sanchez were made on social media. One of the threats
reportedly included a picture of Carlos Sanchez and Andres Escobar. Escobar, who was a member of
Colombia’s national team during the 1994 World Cup, was shot just days after Colombia were eliminated
from the tournament. The defender scored an own goal at the tournament.

Colombia authrities have since launched an investigation into the alleged threats. Local media reported
that authorities assigned a team to look into the death threats made on social media.
