Commonwealth Games: Soyoye, Umeh kiss the canvass in boxing

Nigeria’s hope of another boxing medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games seems to be in doubt as two boxers- Adeola Soyoye and Osita Umeh were beaten in the first round of the men’s event.

Nigeria’s hope of another boxing medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games seems to be in doubt as two boxers- Adeola Soyoye and Osita Umeh were beaten in the first round of the men’s event.

It was Soyoye who competed against Papua New Guinea’s Thadius Katua that first exit the competition after losing all three rounds to his opponent.

Before the three judges decided to award a 3-1 win the boxer from Papua New Guinea, Soyoye lost each round 10-9 in the 60kg bout.

In the men’s 69kg, Umeh was pummeled by his Indian opponent – Manoj Kumar 5-0 after the judges’ decision.

Umeh lost all the three rounds to the Indian to be shown the exit from the tournament.

Today, Millicent Agboegbulem will battle Tonga’s Salote Huni in the women’s 75kg.
