Dessers opens up on why he picked Nigeria over Belgium

Cyriel Dessers insists he’s looking forward to playing more games for the Super Eagles following his recall to the team under new head coach Jose Peseiro.

Born in Belgium to a Belgian father and Nigerian mother, Dessers opted to represent Nigeria ahead of the European nation and the decision seems to be paying off.

Dessers, 27, played the entire minutes of Nigeria’s Super Eagles tour of the United States where the team faced Mexico and Ecuador.

He scored Nigeria’s only goal in the two friendlies, and it was his maiden goal for the three-time African Champions, in three caps.

“It’s a proud moment for me and my family,” Dessers was quoted as saying to Lagos-based Brila FM in an exclusive interview.

“After the Conference League final and then straight to the national team. I can’t be more proud.

“Of cos, I’m half Belgian and Nigerian, but I love Nigeria and looking forward to play more games for the country. I wear the jersey with pride.”

Dessers who scored 21 goals in 42 games for Feyenoord last season made his debut for Nigeria against Tunisia in 2020.
