Diego Simeone close to sealing new Athletico deal

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is close to signing a new contract thus extending his stay with the Spanish club,

The Argentine boss took charge of La Liga in 2011 and has had a successful spell of almost 12 years as boss of the Madrid club.

It now appears that his reign will continue Fabrizio Romanowho has stated that a new deal for the 53-year-old is close to being agreed.

Romano took to Verbal agreement in place, awaiting sealing, but all considered nearly complete.

“After almost twelve years as coach of Atléti, Simeone is prepared to accept the offer and remain at the club.”

During his time as manager of the club, Simeone led Atletico to the La Liga title in 2014 and 2021, and won the Copa del Rey in 2013.

Simeone has also triumphed in Europe. He won the Europa League twice for Atletico and led them to two Champions League finals, losing both to Real Madrid.

He is a four-time winner of La Liga’s coach of the year and is currently La Liga’s longest-serving boss in Europe’s top five leagues.

Only Christian Streich’s reign at Bundesliga side Freiburg comes close to Simeone’s time in charge, with the German also taking charge of the German club in 2011.

In the Premier League, Jürgen Klopp is currently the longest-serving boss, having taken over at Anfield in October 2015.
