Ex-Juventus coach Lippi welcomes Allegri return

Former Juventus coach Marcello Lippi is happy seeing Max Allegri return to the club.

Allegri is back at Juve after two years away.

“Other than a heated soup, it will be delicious seconds,” Lippi told Gazzetta dello Sport. “At this level, a stop after a long cycle is good.

“You relax, you study new tactics and coaches, and you enrich yourself. The team is strong and he knows it well. They arrive from two delicate years.

“Juventus tried new paths, with a coach who is not very experienced but wise and prepared. It was right to try. They didn’t make it and now they decided to go back to winning: there’s no one who could play this role better than Max.”

Lippi also spoke of the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.

He continued: “Look, I too returned to Juve after two years and won two Scudetti, plus playing another Champions League Final.

“I have always thought that Ronaldo is the best goalscorer in the world. He doesn’t create them, but he finishes them.

“It’s important that the team offers him a lot. He has never been a true centre-forward, he has always needed a No. 9 like [Karim] Benzema next to him, but Juve don’t have this No. 9.

“I imagine Allegri will make him play with two other strikers, in a system of overlaps and positional changes that will not give the defences any reference points.”
