Ferdinand slams Man Utd’s exit from Europa League

Rio Ferdinand offered a blunt assessment of Manchester United ’s performance after the loss to Sevilla in the Europa League semi-final.

The Red Devils surrendered the lead to go down 2-1 in Germany, a result that confirms a third successive campaign without silverware.

Bruno Fernandes ’ well-taken penalty had given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ’s men the lead but Sevilla struck back soon after through Suso.

And they were made to pay for several missed chances when Luuk de Jong tapped in late on to seal the La Liga side’s place in the final.

United created more than enough chances to win the game but poor defending for both goals also cost them in the end.

And former Red Devils defender Ferdinand slammed the team’s defending, as well as for not taking their chances.

He tweeted: “You don’t take ya chances you get punished. You don’t defend well you get punished. No need for insight tonight!”

The result marks the second game in succession where United should have put the game to bed early but failed to do so.

Against Copenhagen in the last round they required extra time to see off the Danes when they should have been out of sight.

On Sunday, Fernandes, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford were all guilty of poor finishing in front of goal.

It means United are now on their worst run without a trophy for more than 30 years since the early days of Sir Alex Ferguson.

And Solskjaer has now lost in three semi-finals this season after also going down in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

“It’s very disappointing, hard to take. We played fantastic stuff at times and created chances but couldn’t get the goal we deserved,” said the Norwegian afterward.

United will now lick their wounds and begin to prepare for the next season, which is set to get underway in early September.
