Hertha Berlin beat Tottenham to Krzysztof Piatek’s £23.5m deal

Hertha Berlin have announced the £23.5million signing of Krzysztof Piatek from AC Milan just a day before the transfer window closes.

The Bundesliga outfit have fended off strong competition from Tottenham for the Poland striker’s signature.

Speaking following Thursday’s confirmation, Hertha’s managing director Michael Preetz hailed the club’s new attacking signing – claiming he will bring real quality to the attack.

Preetz said: ‘With Krzysztof we have a highly talented attacker who is impressive at the highest level of his goalscoring and attacking quality, both in Serie A and in the national team.

‘Through him, we now have even more quality in attack. I am sure he will help us a lot in the further development of Hertha.’

Spurs manager Jose Mourinho wanted to bolster his attack by bringing Piatek to the club this month, but made it very clear that he was only interested in signing the Poland international on a loan deal.

AC Milan were keen to offload Piatek on a permanent basis despite only signing him last January from Genoa and rejected Tottenham’s advances before giving Hertha the green light.

The deal means Milan recouped most of the £30.4m they paid to sign Piatek last January.

The 24-year-old netted 16 goals in 41 appearances for the San Siro outfit after joining last year.
