It was tough watching my son fight for his life–Silva

Manchester City midfielder David Silva has described the pain he went through as he watched his son fight for his life.

Mateo Silva was born five months before his due date which placed his life at serious risk.

Keeping tabs on his new born son forced Silva to shuttle Manchester and Valenci in Spain during the 2017-18 campaign as doctors battled to keep Mateo alive.

He was however permitted to take time off in March to be with his girlfriend and son, who was eventually given the all- clear in April.

And speaking about the period, the midfielder revealed to the the Daily Mirror that it had been the ‘toughest of his life’ so far.

‘You just don’t expect to see your baby fighting for his life,’ he said.

‘Looking back you wonder how you coped. I relied on the strength of my girlfriend and my family – and also my team-mates and my club.

‘Mateo was also a source of inspiration because of the way he fought. I was flying from England to Spain, trying to be with my son, trying to train, going back to Manchester to play for City.

‘Mentally it was tough but I had to be strong because I wanted my son to keep fighting.
