Arsenal star, Alex Iwobi has hinted that the Super Eagles have discussed the possibility of Nigeria winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia while also declaring that it is the biggest stage in football ever.

The best the three-time African champions have achieved is the round of 16 while no African team has ever won the Mundial with the likes of Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana reaching the quarter-finals in 1990, 2002 and 2010 respectively.

“The way we qualified in the group made us very confident,” 22-year-old told CNN Sport.

“We’ve played against some big teams, some big countries, so we are very confident that we can go far.”

Asked if the Eagles have discussed about the possibility of winning the World Cup, he said: “Of course, we’ve mentioned it and talked about it so many times in training, on the coach, in the hotel room.

“But we will take it step by step. Our coach always reminds us that we’re not there yet. We need to prepare right. We’ve done well to get this far, so just be relaxed, be cool and wait for when the times comes.

“It’s always been a dream to play in the biggest competition and there’s no bigger competition than the World Cup to me.”

Iwobi will be going to the World Cup for the first time and will hope to help the Super Eagles topple Argentina, Iceland and Croatia in Group D.
