Klopp claims Bayern were lucky to win Champions League

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp thinks Bayern Munich were lucky to win this season’s Champions League.

The Bundesliga outfit are unbeaten in 2020 and defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Champions League final to seal a historic treble.

While Klopp was quick to credit Bayern boss Hansi Flick, he did add that the fixture schedule following football’s return has aided them.

“It is difficult to write more history in eight months,” Klopp told ZDF per Goal.

The German tactican  went on to state that the Bavarians were “a little lucky that, amid all the chaos with schedules, their schedule was best suited to the Champions League.”

Liverpool had already been eliminated before the competition restarted after a loss to Atletico Madrid in the round of 16.

Germany’s top flight was the first league to return following coronavirus suspension and Bayern had a month to recuperate for the mini-tournament in Lisbon.

However, Klopp was quick to stress he thinks Bayern are “at the moment definitely one of the absolute, absolute top teams” in the world.

“[They are] sensationally well equipped,” he continued. “They have absolute world-class players in every position, and all at the right age.”

This year’s final had a slew of attacking talent on display from Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to Robert Lewandowski.

However, the goal came from Kingsley Coman who was handed a shock start ahead of Ivan Perisic.

It is the Frenchman’s 20th major trophy but just a few years ago, it looked like he would never reach his peak.

In 2018, after returning from a serious foot problem, an emotional Coman opened up about his injury woes in an interview with TF1, and even suggested an early retirement if they continued.

“It was a very difficult year,” Coman told TF1. “When I hurt myself, it was the end of the world for me.

“I hope I don’t have to relive what I’ve been through, enough is enough. I will not accept a third operation – it will mean maybe my foot is not made for this level.

“I will then lead another life, an anonymous life.”

But to his credit, the winger has once again become a key figure in Bayern’s recent success, bouncing back from a number of debilitating injuries to make a total of 43 appearances in all competitions this season.
