Kyle Walker-Peters sale a huge mistake-Ian Wright

Ian Wright believes Tottenham made a mistake selling defender Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton in 2020.

The 24-year-old right-back, a product of Tottenham’s academy, earned his first England call-up this week for friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.

Walker Peters has established himself as a key part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, having played 73 times for the St Mary’s outfit.

He initially joined the Saints on loan in January 2020, before sealing a £12 million move from north London the following summer.

The Spurs tried to sign a right-back in January but were unable to do so after failing to convince Serge Aurier, Matt Doherty or Emerson Royal.

Kyle Walker-Peters. It’s great to see him. I remember watching him at Tottenham and I think they got rid of him and brought in Serge Aurier.

“When I watched Serge for a few games, I thought ‘sorry, Kyle Walker-Peters is a better player,’” he said.

“They brought in Emerson Royal and I’m sorry, he’s a better player. And even with Doherty doing great things in the future, I’ve seen Walker-Peters and I’m glad he called.

“I think why did Tottenham get rid of him when you see how he plays?

“For him to get the call — I’m definitely made up. For me that helps him, that gives him that buzz that makes him go ‘yes’.
