Man United fans hail Mount in Carabao Cup ouster

Mason Mount has been hailed by Man United fans after he turned out to be the only united play that stayed back to clap and identified with the fans despite another shock defeat at the Old Trafford Wednesday.

United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup last night after a 3-0 home defeat to Newcastle, prompting a chorus of boos.

Goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock sealed victory for the Magpies three nights after the Red Devils suffered another humbling 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

But despite the poor result, England international Mount was filmed applauding the supporters by the few people left after the whistle.

Commenting on the 24-year-old’s video, one fan said: “He has my respect.”

Another also added: ‘This shows so much character. I loved seeing this from a much-maligned Mason Mount. More power to him.’

While many fans appreciated Chelsea’s £60million summer signing, who took the time to appreciate the supporters, some were less sympathetic.

One fan wrote: ‘I’d do a few laps around the stadium if I was on the money he was on.’

Another said: ‘He’s not here to clap, he’s here to play football… he has to give his best and be a serious player.’

A third added: ‘Take it from the Chelsea fans. This is the only thing he’s good at,” while a fourth said: “Ahh. The classic Mount claps after dropping stinker after stinker.”

Last month, Chelsea legend John Terry suggested there was an ‘untold side’ to Mount’s acrimonious departure from Chelsea and asked fans ‘not to be too harsh’ if he returns to Stamford Bridge with Man United.

The 24-year-old currently has one assist in nine games for the Red Devils.
