Mendy ‘completes’ Chelsea medical

Chelsea will announce Edouard Mendy as their seventh summer signing in the very near future as he has already passed his medical at the club, according to reports. The Blues have made a huge statement of intent this summer with over £200million spent on overhauling their squad.

Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr have all joined, although the latter will be sent out on loan for this season.

But their spending clearly isn’t finished as Lampard made it clear to club officials that he wanted to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper, with his wish set to be granted.

Kepa Arrizabalaga struggled to convince the Chelsea boss that he could be his No 1 option moving forward.

The Spaniard was dropped for the final game of last season as well as the FA Cup final against Arsenal.

After being linked with goalkeepers such as Andre Onana and Jan Oblak, Chelsea have settled on Rennes goalkeeper Mendy.

The 28-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign in Ligue 1 last season – just five years after he nearly quit the sport altogether.

But Chelsea are set to confirm his switch to west London imminently with Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol reporting that Mendy was at the club’s stadium on Monday afternoon.

“Edouard Mendy was in actual fact at Stamford Bridge this afternoon having his picture taken and being shown around the stadium,” he said.

“He had completed his medical so I think we are getting to the stage where it will be announced imminently by Chelsea that they’ve signed Edouard Mendy.”

It means Mendy could well be in contention to make his debut as early as this Sunday in the crunch game against defending champions Liverpool.

Chelsea technical director Petr Cech was said to be a key part in the club’s interest in Mendy.

He was said to have been the one to recommend Chelsea sign the Senegalese goalkeeper.
