Mikel: I won’t extend my contract with Boro

John Mikel Obi has revealed that the hunger to win trophies is the reason why he won’t be extending his contract with Middlesbrough.

The Nigerian made the disclosure after Boro failed to qualify for the playoffs despite their 2-1 win against Rotherham United on Sunday which was the last day of the season in the English Championship.

Interestingly it was the match that Obi was getting on the scorer’s sheet for the first time which turned out to be the winning goal since joining Boro in January on a short term deal.

”I still want to win trophies, so I will go somewhere where you know, the players, the fans and the team want to win,” he told BBC Tees Sport.

He was also privileged to captain the side in its last six games despite putting up some impressive displays.

”I don’t know, you can never say never. My contract ends, if there’s a conversation, okay fine,” the former Lyn Oslo star told BBC Tees Sport.

”It’s a great club, it’s a big club. They will find the right players, get that dressing room back and make sure next season they are in the playoffs or automatic promotion.

”I don’t know, we’ll see what happens. I have conversation with my people and then we’ll see what comes out, options here and there.

”There’s a lot of option but you always have to pick the right one, the one that is going to suit you and suit the way you play and what you want to achieve.
