Lloris has been criticised for some suspect performances and there has been some debate over whether the Tottenham captain should be dropped for Joe Hart.

But Mourinho insists Lloris remains his No1.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s Europa League tie against Austrian side Wolfsberger, Mourinho said: “When a player is a top player, it’s not because of one mistake, or two or three, that he’s not a top player any more. That’s the most important thing.

“I shouldn’t speak about him because he’s not my goalkeeper but for me Allison is one of the top five goalkeepers in the world and in the last couple of matches he made big mistakes.

“But he might have been in the top five goalkeepers in the world. Hugo is the same, he’s an amazing goalkeeper who is performing super consistently since he recovered from that fracture. Since my time here, he is recovering so, so well.

“If he had responsibility in one or another goal we conceded recently, he’s still a great goalkeeper. He’s my No1 choice and he has all my trust and confidence.

“In Joe Hart’s case, I’m happy. He played already nine matches since season which is more, If I’m not wrong, than in the previous two seasons. Which is very, very good. He’s a goalkeeper I totally trust, too.”
